Three factors influenced the ranking. Researchers assessed the proportion of people in the county with small business income, how much business income those people reported, and the amount of tax a resident must pay on their income.

The day kicked off with an interactive display of technical demonstrations and stations designed to illustrate the work going on throughout Talbot County for broadband deployment. Guests enjoyed a hands-on experience with field crews showcasing their work, including all components from initial construction techniques to the installation to the side of the home.

The event was hosted by Talbot County Economic Development and Tourism, Talbot County Chamber of Commerce, and Easton Economic Development Corporation.

- [2023 Community Impact Award Winner: Chesapeake Landing Restaurant and Bay Hundred Seafood](https://talbot.destinationbydesign.com/2023-community-impact-award-winner-chesapeake-landing-restaurant-and-bay-hundred-seafood/): Joe Spurry Sr. started working on the water when he was just 16 years old. “They were the best years of my life,” he says. “But when I turned the corner, I never looked back.” Turning that corner led him to open Bay Hundred Seafood in McDaniel in 1984, followed by Chesapeake Landing Seafood Restaurant in 1993. Most of his family, including son Joe Jr. and daughter Erin, as well as his wife Nida still work in the family business today. The Spurrys sell seafood up and down the East Coast, and their restaurant is considered “the local’s favorite” in Talbot County. Joe Jr. returned to Talbot County after a stint in the Marine Corps and has worked in the family seafood business for 36 years. Erin, who was just two years old when her parents bought the old Jarboe and Harrison “picking house,” grew up in the business. Though Joe Sr. and Nida are still actively involved, Joe Jr. now oversees the wholesale operation and Erin the restaurant.

These are the words that come to mind when you step inside the doors of Channel Marker’s new Residential Crisis Services unit on Glebe Park Drive in Easton. The 2,650 sq. ft. facility is spartan, yet comfortable. Heavy modern furniture adds a splash of color and style, though bedrooms typically feature simple white linens and a cupboard for one’s personal belongings. The facility includes a lounge, kitchen, computer room, social area, and even a gym. Officially named “The Bridge” by donors Cecilia and Robert Noble, this facility serves as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization and is the home of the most recent service added to the vast menu of psychiatric rehabilitation programs at Channel Marker.

- [2023 Community Impact Award Winner: Ferry Cove Oyster Hatchery](https://talbot.destinationbydesign.com/2023-community-impact-award-winner-ferry-cove-oyster-hatchery/): Stephan Abel has an ambitious goal — plant one billion oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. Each and every year. Now in his second year of production, he’s well on his way to achieving that goal. Abel is the president and CEO of Ferry Cove Shellfish, a new, state-of-the-art oyster hatchery in Sherwood, just a stone’s throw from the Chesapeake Bay. Ferry Cove is poised to become one of the largest oyster hatcheries on the East Coast. The mission: produce oyster larvae and seed to sell to commercial producers, thereby increasing oyster production and feeding the hungry oyster market. Of course, if it were that easy, there might be a hatchery on every corner. “Hatcheries are expensive to operate and the return on investment is low,” says Abel. “To break even and make money, you’ve got to produce a high volume.”

And right now, the clock is ticking to encourage more people to register as living organ donors. Lee’s first gift of a medical transplant came when he was just seven years old. He was diagnosed at the age of five and beat the odds, facing a survival rate of less than 1 percent from AML leukemia, through a transplant of bone marrow donated by someone who was then a stranger. Now Lee, his family, and that donor, Lori Groen of South Milwaukee, Wis., are lifelong friends and consider each other’s families their own.
